Scrap a van the legal, simple way
If the van is beyond economical repair, an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) is the correct route. You get paid by bank transfer, the van is depolluted properly, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction so you are no longer liable for it.
Licensed ATFs only
UK law requires end-of-life vans to be processed by an Environment Agency licensed ATF. Selling to an unlicensed dealer can put the fine on you.
Paid by bank transfer
Cash for scrap is illegal in the UK. A legitimate operator pays into your account and never asks for an upfront fee.
Certificate of Destruction
The ATF must issue a CoD within seven days. Keep it. It is your proof the vehicle was legally destroyed under ELV regulations.
What scrap value is based on
Straight scrap is weight × the current mixed-steel price per tonne. A typical panel van of 1.5–2 tonnes often lands around £150–£400, moving with metal markets.
That number is the floor, not always the best outcome. Popular models (Transit, Transporter, Sprinter) can be worth more as salvage or parts than as metal. If the van is a high-demand make, read the selling guide before you accept a scrap-only quote.
Could parts beat scrap? See the guide →| Van situation | Typical scrap range |
|---|---|
| Standard panel van | £150–£350 |
| Long-wheelbase Transit / Sprinter | £250–£400 |
| Heavily corroded shell | £100–£250 |
| Flood or fire damaged | £100–£400 |
